The Chennai Grandmasters Chess Championship 2023 showcased stellar performances from some of India’s top chess players, including local sensation D Gukesh. Held from December 15 to 21 and organized by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, the tournament featured a diverse lineup of eight Grandmasters – five international and three Indian – engaging in a round-robin format with seven rounds of classical chess.

In a thrilling finale, GM Gukesh Dommaraju strategically navigated a slightly inferior endgame against GM Pentala Harikrishna, ultimately clinching the title on tiebreaks. Meanwhile, GM Arjun Erigaisi exhibited a determined effort, defeating GM Sanan Sjugirov in a complex game with the tournament title hanging in the balance. With this victory, Gukesh edges closer to securing a spot in the prestigious Candidates Tournament 2024.
